I’ve written about so many cities by now, so it only makes sense to finally write one about my own: Amsterdam.
Amsterdam is a compact, walkable city that’s easy to explore even on a short layover. It’s known for its canals, cycling culture, museums, and relaxed atmosphere. Whether you’re here for a few hours or a full weekend, there’s plenty to see and do without needing a strict plan.
Here are my tips for making the most of your time in Amsterdam as a non-rev traveler.
How to non-rev to Amsterdam
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is one of Europe’s busiest and most accessible hubs making it a favorite for standby travelers. It’s the main base for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and serves a wide range of global carriers.
Here’s a quick overview of airlines flying non-stop to AMS. Use the StaffTraveler app to check flight loads and availability.

See the City by Bike
Biking is the way to go in Amsterdam. Rent a bike and explore like a local, but be sure to stay in the bike lanes and follow the rules because it can get pretty hectic. Whether you’re cycling through Vondelpark or crossing charming canal bridges, biking is the best way to experience the city and the easiest way to get around!
Stroll Along the Canals
Amsterdam’s canals are as famous as its tulips and bikes. You can enjoy a calm stroll along the water or bike (ofcourse). There are plenty of quiet, hidden streets nearby to explore. Along the way, you’ll find many cozy cafés and shops to stop by.
Tip: Begin your walk in the Jordaan district, where you’ll find some of the prettiest streets, a nice atmosphere, and plenty of spots to grab a coffee or browse local stores.

Visit the Rijksmuseum
No trip to Amsterdam is complete without a stop at the Rijksmuseum, the city’s most famous art museum. Here, you’ll find masterpieces from Dutch Golden Age painters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals, as well as stunning sculptures, artifacts, and even a grand library.
Whether you’re an art lover or just curious about Dutch history, the Rijksmuseum is a must-see. Tip: Arrive early in the morning or book your ticket online to avoid long queues.
Explore De Pijp
Head to De Pijp, a local-favorite neighborhood full of lively terraces, indie boutiques, and the famous Albert Cuyp Market. Grab a fresh stroopwafel, browse vintage shops, or relax in nearby Sarphatipark.
Take a Ferry to Amsterdam Noord
Hop on the free ferry behind Central Station and head to Amsterdam Noord, a creative and industrial area full of hidden gems. Explore NDSM Wharf, famous for its massive street art, pop-up exhibitions, and laid-back vibe. Stop by one of the cozy waterside cafés, visit IJ-Hallen, Europe’s largest flea market, or end your day at Pllek, a popular restaurant on the water with stunning sunset views over the city.
Rent a Boat
Want to experience Amsterdam like a true local? Skip the large tourist boats and rent a small electric boat with friends. There are plenty of rental companies to choose from, and you don’t need a license. Bring along some snacks, a couple of cold Heineken beers, and enjoy cruising through the canals at your own pace.
We highly recommend visiting Amsterdam! Check seat availability for your non-rev flight today and start planning your trip. Want to explore more cities in The Netherlands? Read this blog! And stay tuned for next week’s post, where I’ll share the best day trips from Amsterdam.
