City trips are awesome! But when you’re vegan, finding restaurants with vegan options in a foreign city isn’t always that easy. Luckily, new vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants are popping up everywhere. But which cities are the most vegan-friendly in the world? Here’s the rundown on the 6 best vegan cities in the world:*

London

Topping the list is London, which is home to 152 vegan restaurants. Veganism continues to be one of the UK’s fastest-growing lifestyle movements. This is certainly reflected in London’s massive vegan scene. The word vegan can be seen all over the city and there are a lot of vegan events. Even in the supermarkets, you’ll find a whole range of vegan dishes and treats.

London was the first to have a vegan chicken shop called ‘The Temple of Seitan’. This place serves all kinds of incredible vegan fried chicken in sandwiches, tubs, and mac ‘n’ cheese. London was also the first place in the UK with a plant-based cheese shop. This place called: ‘La Fauxmagerie’ has delightful artisanal cheeses from across Britain.

A must when you love sushi is the vegan Japanese restaurant ‘Itadakizen’, which serves tapas-style Japanese classics like grilled onigiri, vegan sushi, noodles, and tofu-steaks. And for pizza lovers has London an amazing vegan pizza scene, with places as ‘PickyWops’, ‘Purezza’ and ‘Young Vegans Pizza Shop’.

New York

A 2018 ranking of the most vegan-friendly cities in the US was not surprisingly topped by New York. The city offers up vegan alternatives for pretty much every food item you could ever wish for.

If you are seeking a place to enjoy lunch, visit ‘Le Botaniste’. The charming restaurant and wine bar serves up a small selection of appetizers, bowls, design-your-own salads, and desserts.

Looking for vegan comfort food? Then ‘Modern Love Brooklyn’ will be your place. This restaurant was named the best vegan restaurant by New York Magazine! Go to ‘Dun-Well Doughnuts’ in Brooklyn for the most delicious vegan doughnuts free of milk, butter, and eggs.

Berlin

Berlin is fast becoming known as one of the best cities in the world where the vegan scene grows and thrives. The city is home to “vegan street” (Schivelbeiner Straße), a block-long stretch in Prenzlauerberg which hosts plant-based restaurants, cafes, and vegan clothing shops. It this street you’ll also find ‘Veganz’, the first vegan supermarket chain in Europe.

Berliners are familiar with the vegan lifestyle, and it is incredibly simple to find options throughout this city. Some must-visit spots include: ‘Secret Garden’ where you can eat vegan sushi, dumplings, fusion bowls, soups, and desserts. When you’re in Berlin, you should definitely try a Flammkuchen. You can eat a vegan version of this German pizza at ‘Kiez Vegan’.

Los Angeles

Los Angeles is one of the easiest places on the planet to be vegan. Even in the airport at Terminal 4 you can find plant-based food at ‘Real Food Daily’. The city has a lot of plant-based restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, and grocery stores. The southern city even has its own vegan milkman.

If you’re in Los Angeles stop by ‘Little Pine Restaurant’ a vegan restaurant owned by animal activist and musician Moby. Or check out ‘Crossroads Kitchen’ an upmarket vegan eatery offering wine, cocktails, and Mediterranean inspired food.

Every June, Los Angeles hosts ‘Eat Drink Vegan’, which is a Vegan Beer & Food Festival in Pasadena. The festival has a plant-based marketplace showcasing clothing, artwork, food (over 100 restaurants and food trucks!), skincare, wellness and more.

Toronto

Even more food festivals! In September you’ll find North America’s largest celebration of all things veg, called: ‘Veg Food Fest’. This is a must-visit!

When you’re here during other months you can also eat your heart out. Satisfy your junk food cravings with vegan chicken waffles at ‘Hogtown Vegan’. This spot is all about comfort food classics with funny names like unchicken & waffles, phish & chips, and chili “cheese” fries. Or eat vegan pizza at ‘Apiecalypse Now!’ They serve up delicious pizzas, sweet treats, and other tasty dishes.

Warsaw

The city of Warsaw is a vegan paradise right in the middle of Europe. Many vegan travelers have expressed their surprise upon arriving in Warsaw and finding so many vegan restaurants. The offerings are diverse, you can find everything here, from traditional Polish food to burgers and from sushi to vegan hot dogs. Best of all, the prices here are much lower than in the more touristic Western European countries.

A must when dining in Warsaw is ‘Youmiko Vegan Sushi‘. The sushi here is mind-blowing. The combinations, fresh ingredients and the thoughtful composition of their menu selection are amazing. The creative and artistic approach makes eating here a great experience.

If you are seeking a place to enjoy lunch, visit ‘Vege Bistro’ which offers its vegan versions of traditional Polish food, like vegan pierogi (Polish dumplings) and racuchy (Polish apple pancakes).

*Based on a list made by online vegan restaurant guide HappyCow. The list ranks cities according to four factors: the number of vegan restaurants in a five-mile radius in the most vegan restaurant-dense area in each city, the number of vegan/vegetarian/veg-option restaurants in the same five-mile radius, vegan restaurant count to population density, and their impression of the over-all vegan-friendliness of the city.
