There are simply too many incredible places in the world to explore, especially when you have non-rev rights. Last week, I took you through some unforgettable UNESCO gems across Europe. But with over 1200 UNESCO World Heritage Sites worldwide, there’s no way we’re stopping there.
This week, we’re heading east into a continent where history stretches back thousands of years and cultures are as diverse as its landscapes: Asia.
From the wildlife of Chitwan National Park to the temples of Angkor Wat, Asia is packed with must-visit destinations perfect for your next non-rev adventure.
7. Chitwan National Park, Nepal
Chitwan National Park was the first national park in Nepal and is one of the best places in Asia to see wildlife up close. Located in the southern lowlands, it is home to rare animals like the one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger, elephants, and crocodiles.
You can explore the park in different ways, such as jeep safaris, canoe trips along the river, or guided jungle walks. It’s a great destination if you want a completely different experience from Nepal’s mountains and are looking for a more relaxed, nature-focused adventure.
6. Ankor Wat, Cambodia
The temples of Angkor Wat are one of the most famous landmarks in the world. Built in the 12th century, it is the largest religious monument on Earth and a symbol of Cambodia.
Most travelers visit at sunrise, when the temple reflects beautifully in the water. But Angkor is much more than just one temple; you can spend days exploring the area, discovering hidden ruins, massive stone faces, and temples.
5. Historic City of Ayutthaya, Thailand
The Historic City of Ayutthaya was once a powerful and wealthy capital of Thailand. Now, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with impressive ruins and ancient temples.
You’ll see large Buddha statues, crumbling towers, and one of the most famous sights: a Buddha head wrapped in tree roots. Ayutthaya is only about an hour from Bangkok, making it an easy day trip and a great way to experience Thailand’s history.
4. Takayama & Shirakawa-go, Japan
The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama give you a rare look at what life in rural Japan was like centuries ago. The villages are famous for their traditional wooden farmhouses with steep, thatched roofs, built to survive heavy winter snow.
In winter, the villages are covered in snow, creating a magical, fairytale-like scene. Just a short trip away is Takayama, a small city with a beautifully preserved old town, narrow streets lined with traditional shops, local food markets, and seasonal festivals. Together, Takayama and the historic villages make a perfect combination for experiencing both Japanese culture and countryside charm.
3. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, Vietnam
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is known for its incredible caves and natural beauty. It is home to some of the largest caves in the world, including Sơn Đoòng Cave, one of the biggest ever discovered.
You can take boat trips into caves, go hiking in the jungle, or even join guided cave expeditions. The combination of underground rivers, limestone mountains, and dense landscapes makes this a unique destination for adventure lovers.
2. Komodo National Park, Indonesia
Komodo National Park is the only place in the world where you can see Komodo dragons in the wild. These giant lizards can grow up to three meters long and are fascinating to observe.
The park is made up of several islands with beautiful beaches, clear blue water, and great viewpoints. It’s also a top spot for snorkeling and diving, with colorful coral reefs and marine life. This destination is perfect if you want both wildlife and tropical island vibes.
1. Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, Philippines
The Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras are an incredible example of how people have worked with nature for thousands of years. These terraces were carved into the mountains over 2,000 years ago by local communities.
They are still used today to grow rice using traditional methods. The views are stunning, with layers of green terraces stretching across the mountains. Visiting this area not only offers beautiful scenery but also a chance to learn about local culture and traditions.
