Hi, I’m Fleur, Marketing Manager at StaffTraveler. In the spring of 2022, I had the chance to explore Mexico with a group of friends and wow, what a trip! From tropical islands and ancient ruins to vibrant towns and unforgettable parties, Mexico had it all. In this blog, I’ll take you through our 10-day itinerary.  Let’s dive in!

Let's go to Isla Holbox

Our journey began in Cancun, although we didn’t stay long. After landing, we hopped straight on a bus to the city and checked into our hostel for the night. It was a quick stopover before heading to a beautiful island nearby.

Early the next morning, we took a bus and ferry to Isla Holbox, a laid-back island off Mexico’s northern Yucatán Peninsula. We spent a few days here, biking around the island, relaxing at the beach, and soaking in the relaxed, car-free atmosphere. Holbox is all about slow living: hammocks by the ocean, fresh seafood, and dreamy sunsets. It was the perfect place to unwind but also great if you’re in the mood to party. One of the highlights was joining a bioluminescence tour at night, where we saw the water light up with every movement, truly magical and something I’ll never forget.

Cenotes, Mexico

After a few days on Isla Holbox, we made our way inland to the colorful town of Valladolid. We stayed in a cozy hostel and used this charming city as a base to explore the surrounding area. Instead of visiting the well-known (and often crowded) Chichén Itzá, we opted for Ek Balam, a lesser-known Mayan site that felt much more peaceful. The best part? You can still climb the ruins for an amazing view!

Nearby, we explored some of the region’s famous cenotes, natural freshwater sinkholes that are absolutely magical to swim in. There are so many to choose from, each with its own unique vibe. I definitely recommend visiting a few, as it’s easy to hop between them in just one day.

When we weren’t out exploring, we wandered through the colorful streets of Valladolid, tasted delicious local street food, and enjoyed some of the best Mexican meals of the entire trip.

For the final stretch of our adventure, we headed to Tulum, a perfect mix of chill beaches and vibrant nightlife. We spent two days relaxing at our hostel during the day and dancing with friends at night. Tulum has such a great atmosphere, with friendly people and an easygoing vibe. It was the perfect place to wrap up our Mexican journey on a high note.

This trip through Mexico was the perfect mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation. From island sunsets to ancient ruins and vibrant nights out, every stop brought something unique. I’m already dreaming of going back and if you ever get the chance to explore this beautiful country, don’t think twice.  ¡Hasta luego, México!
