Hi, I’m Fleur, Marketing Manager at StaffTraveler, and I have a huge passion for running. I’ve only completed one marathon so far, but I love diving into the running world and discovering races to add to my bucket list. For me, marathons aren’t just about covering 42 kilometers, they’re about the adventure, the scenery, and the people you share the journey with.
While the big-city majors are incredible bucket-list events, I’ve recently been drawn to unique marathons around the world that you might not have heard of. These races combine travel and running in unforgettable ways and in this blog, I’ll take you through some of my favorite finds.
1. Great Wall Marathon – China
Imagine running thousands of steps across one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. The Great Wall Marathon isn’t just about distance, it’s about endurance, as you climb steep staircases and take in breathtaking views. It’s often described as one of the toughest but most rewarding marathons out there.
How to non-rev there: The closest major airport is Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) or the newer Beijing Daxing (PKX). Both are well-connected, giving you multiple standby options. From there, the race area is about a 3–4 hour drive.

2. The Big Five Marathon – South Africa
The Big Five Marathon in South Africa is truly one of a kind. Set in a private game reserve, the course takes you through the natural habitat of Africa’s most iconic wildlife: the “Big Five”: elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, and leopard. Along the way, you’ll also pass zebras, giraffes, antelopes, and countless other animals. No fences, no crowds, just raw African wilderness, it’s the ultimate adventure for any runner.
How to non-rev there: Your best bet is to fly into Johannesburg (JNB), South Africa’s busiest hub with plenty of standby opportunities. From there, you can either take a domestic flight or make the long but scenic drive to the reserve in Limpopo Province.
3. Walt Disney World Marathon – Florida, USA
For a totally different vibe, the Disney Marathon in Orlando is pure fun. You run through all four Disney parks, cheered on by Disney characters, music, and incredible energy. It’s a perfect option for runners who want a more festive (and family-friendly) marathon experience.
How to non-rev there: Head to Orlando International Airport (MCO), which is very well connected to both domestic US and international flights.
4. Athens Marathon – Greece
Known as the “authentic marathon,” this race follows the legendary route from the town of Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. It’s a chance to literally run in the footsteps of history, finishing in one of the most iconic stadiums in the world.
How to non-rev there: Athens International Airport (ATH) is the main hub and offers a wide range of European and long-haul connections.
5. Kangaroo Island Marathon – Australia
Held on one of Australia’s most stunning nature reserves, this marathon takes you along coastlines, eucalyptus forests, and beaches where kangaroos and koalas are your spectators. It’s remote, wild, and unforgettable.
How to non-rev there: Fly into Adelaide (ADL), then take a short domestic flight or ferry to Kangaroo Island. ADL is a mid-size hub with decent standby possibilities, especially from Sydney or Melbourne.
6. Patagonian International Marathon – Chile
Patagonia is a dream for adventure lovers, and this marathon is set in Torres del Paine National Park. Expect jaw-dropping scenery, snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and turquoise lakes. It’s more than a race; it’s a journey to the edge of the world.
How to non-rev there: Fly into Santiago (SCL), then take a domestic flight to Punta Arenas (PUQ). From there, it’s about 5 hours by road to the park.
7. Lost City Marathon – Mexico
Run through jungle trails, ancient Mayan ruins, and remote villages, this marathon is all about atmosphere and adventure. Set in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, the Lost City Marathon is as much about culture and discovery as it is about running.
How to non-rev there: The closest major airport is Cancún International (CUN), a large hub with many international flights and good standby potential. From there, it’s a road trip into the jungle.
Whether you’re running on the Great Wall of China, through African savannas, or among ancient ruins, these marathons prove that running can take you to the most extraordinary places. And as a non-rev traveler, the journey to get there becomes part of the adventure.
Which one of these marathons would you put at the top of your list?
