Amsterdam is an amazing city to explore, but sometimes you just want to escape the crowds and see more of what The Netherlands has to offer. If you’ve already ticked off the highlights in the capital (check out my blog on what to do in Amsterdam for tips), these day trips are the perfect way to experience charming towns and unique Dutch culture all within easy reach of the city.

1. Leiden

Just 35 minutes from Amsterdam, Leiden is a historic university city, home to the country’s oldest university founded in 1575. The city is full of picturesque canals, charming cafés, and centuries-old buildings. Visit the Hortus Botanicus, the oldest botanical garden in the Netherlands, explore the National Museum of Antiquities, or take a relaxing boat tour through the city center.

2. The Hague

Known as the political heart of the Netherlands, The Hague houses the Dutch parliament and the International Court of Justice. The city combines stately architecture and world-class museums with a laid-back beach vibe. See the Binnenhof and masterpieces in the Mauritshuis Museum, then head to Scheveningen Beach for a walk on the pier or fresh seafood by the water.

3. Rotterdam

Rotterdam is the largest port city in Europe and a hub of modern architecture, creativity, and innovation. Unlike Amsterdam’s historic vibe, Rotterdam feels urban, with striking landmarks like the Cube Houses and the Erasmus Bridge. Visit the Markthal for delicious food, hop on a water taxi to see the skyline, and enjoy panoramic views from the Euromast Tower.

4. Amersfoort

Amersfoort is a medieval city with a beautifully preserved old town full of narrow streets, canals, and historic gates. The Koppelpoort, a 15th-century gate, is a must-see. Climb the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren for stunning views or visit the Mondriaan House, birthplace of the famous painter Piet Mondriaan. It’s a charming, less-crowded alternative to the bigger Dutch cities.

5. Haarlem

Often called a “mini-Amsterdam,” Haarlem is a historic trading city just 15 minutes from the capital. It was an important center during the Dutch Golden Age, and you can still see this history in its architecture and museums. Stroll around the Grote Markt, visit the Teylers and Frans Hals Museums, and check out the beautiful St. Bavo Church. On sunny days, a bike ride to nearby Zandvoort Beach is a must.

6. Utrecht

Utrecht is a lively student city with a rich history dating back to Roman times. It’s known for its unique canals, lined with wharf cellars that now host cafés and restaurants right at water level. Climb the iconic Dom Tower for incredible views or relax by the canals with a drink. Utrecht has a fun, young atmosphere while still feeling historic and cozy.

7. Alkmaar

Alkmaar is the cheese capital of the Netherlands, famous for its traditional cheese market held on Fridays in spring and summer. Beyond cheese, the city has a charming old town, the Dutch Cheese Museum, and scenic streets perfect for a stroll. From here, you can rent a bike and ride to the nearby dunes and beaches for a classic Dutch countryside experience.

Whether you’re visiting Amsterdam for a weekend or staying a little longer, these day trips are a perfect way to see more of the Netherlands without traveling far. Each city has its own unique charm  from Leiden’s historic university vibes to Rotterdam’s modern skyline and Alkmaar’s famous cheese markets. With short and frequent train connections, it’s easy to escape the busy streets of Amsterdam for a day and experience another side of Dutch culture, history, and scenery. So, grab your train ticket, pack your camera, and make the most of your time exploring beyond the capital.
