Hi, I’m Fleur, Marketing Manager at StaffTraveler. As you may know, I have a huge passion for running, and I try to combine that passion with travel whenever possible. You might have seen my post ‘7 Unique Marathons Around the World’, and it got me thinking: I need to write one about half-marathons!

Half marathons are the perfect excuse to explore a new destination, especially for non-rev travelers looking to turn a trip abroad into an unforgettable race experience. I wish I could tick off every unique race around the world.

Let’s dive into 5 unique half marathons that might just inspire your next adventure.

Lake Garda 42, Italy

Running along the shores of Italy’s largest lake, Lake Garda 42 offers continuous views of the water and surrounding mountains. The course follows the lakeside for most of the race, providing a scenic route from start to finish.

The half marathon is mostly flat, making it a fast and accessible option for runners of all levels. For those looking for a longer challenge, a full marathon is also available. A highlight of the event is the post-race experience, because we are in Italy remember? So that means excellent Italian food, wine, and a relaxed vibe.

Getting there:
The closest airport is Verona, with Milan and Venice as alternative options. From any airport, take a train to Peschiera del Garda, then hop on a local bus or taxi.

Rome Half Marathon

If you love history, Rome is a must-visit, and running the Rome Half Marathon is one of the best ways to see the city. The course passes through the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and Piazza Venezia, making it feel like a sightseeing tour. The route is mostly flat, which makes it approachable for runners of all levels, however the cobblestones could be a bit tricky!

The atmosphere is amazing, with locals cheering along the streets and the city’s vibrant energy carrying you from start to finish. And of course, no Italian race is complete without the post-run perks: delicious Roman cuisine, a glass of wine (or two), and plenty of spots to relax and soak up the city’s beauty.

Getting there:
Fly into Rome’s Fiumicino (FCO) or Ciampino (CIA) airports. From either airport, take a train, shuttle, or bus straight to the city center.

Istanbul Half Marathon

If you run the Istanbul Half Marathon, you get to do something truly unique: run across two continents in a single race. The race starts on the Asian side of Istanbul, and finishes on the European side, giving you a front-row view of the Bosphorus and the city’s stunning skyline. The course is a mix of flat stretches and gentle inclines, making it accessible for most runners. And after the race? Turkish cuisine, fresh seafood, and strong coffee, definitely worth celebrating with.

Getting there:
Istanbul has two main airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side. From either airport, you can reach the city center by shuttle, taxi, or the metro (from IST) or Havatas bus (from SAW).

KLM Curacao Marathon

Curacao half marathon

The KLM Curaçao Half Marathon is all about sunshine, sea views, and island vibes. Yes, you’ll need to be able to handle the Caribbean heat, but if you can, this is a race you won’t want to miss. The course takes you through colorful streets and along the coast, so it’s a constant reminder that you’re running in paradise.

What makes this race extra special is how easy it is to turn it into a full island getaway. Think white-sand beaches, crystal-clear water, snorkeling, swimming, and plenty of time to relax after race day. It’s the perfect mix of running and vacation mode.

Getting there:
Fly into Hato International Airport (CUR), Curaçao’s main airport. There are direct flights from several European and North American cities, including Amsterdam with KLM. From the airport, it’s a short taxi or shuttle ride to Willemstad and most hotels on the island.

Marakez Pyramids Half Marathon, Egypt

Always wanted to see the pyramids in Egypt? What better way than to run right next to them. The Pyramids Half Marathon lets you race through one of the most iconic landscapes in the world, with the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx as your view. It truly feels like running through history.

The course is mostly flat but exposed, so expect warm temperatures and plenty of sun. The atmosphere is unlike any other race, combining ancient wonders with a once-in-a-lifetime running experience. This is one of those events that’s less about chasing a PR and more about soaking it all in.

Getting there:
Fly into Cairo International Airport (CAI). From the airport, travel by taxi or hotel transfer to Giza, where the race takes place near the pyramids. Many runners choose to stay in Giza to be close to the start and enjoy early-morning views of the pyramids.
