Flying standby is one of the best perks of working in aviation but every non-rev knows the frustration of watching flight after flight leave full while your name never gets called. Timing is everything. Knowing which months and days usually offer the best seat availability can mean the difference between a smooth adventure and a night on the airport floor.

In this blog, we’ll walk you through a month-by-month breakdown of seat availability to help you plan your non-rev trips smarter. While loads always depend on routes and airlines, these patterns hold true across most regions and can give you a solid head start.

Seat Availability by Month

  • January – Average: The holiday rush fades after New Year’s, so mid-January is usually decent for non-revving. Be mindful of ski destinations in Europe and North America, which can still be packed.

  • February – Good: One of the best months for non-revs. Outside of Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day weekend in the U.S., February is relatively quiet. Great time for a winter getaway.

  • March – Challenging: Spring break makes it tough to find open seats, especially on flights to sunny spots like Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Southern Europe.

  • April – Average: Early April is busy with Easter and school breaks, but by the end of the month it’s usually easier to find seats.

  • May – Average: Seat availability can go either way. Most of the month is okay, but Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. is the start of the busy summer season.

  • June – Challenging: The summer rush begins, especially in the second half of the month. Schools are out, families start traveling, and flights fill up fast.

  • July – Challenging: One of the toughest months to fly standby. Summer vacations are in full swing around the world, and most flights to popular spots are packed.

  • August – Challenging: Another tough summer month, especially in Europe where August is prime vacation time. Flights can be oversold, not just full.

  • September – Good: One of the best months to fly standby. Kids are back in school, summer crowds are gone, but airlines still have plenty of flights. Seats are usually much easier to find.

  • October – Average: Usually an okay month for standby. Some school breaks can make certain weeks busier, but overall it’s manageable. Halloween doesn’t affect flights much, though long weekends can fill up.

  • November – Average: Early November is fairly calm, but beware of Thanksgiving week in the U.S., one of the busiest travel periods of the year. Europe and Asia are easier during this month.

  • December – Average: Early December is excellent for non-revs, with low demand before the holidays. But Christmas and New Year’s turn the second half of the month into one of the most challenging periods of the year.

Best Days of the Week to Non-Rev

  • Tuesdays & Wednesdays are golden as these tend to be the lightest travel days, especially for business routes.
  • Saturdays can sometimes be surprisingly good, since business travelers are at home and most leisure travelers prefer Fridays or Sundays.
  • Fridays & Sundays are the toughest, with airports packed on both ends of the weekend

In short, the best months to non-rev are February and September, while March, June, July, August, and late December are the hardest. Holidays like Easter, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s also make flights busier than usual. For the best chances, aim for midweek flights, especially Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Keep these patterns in mind, and you’ll make non-revving a lot less stressful. With the right timing, strategy, and a little patience, you’ll be on your way to smoother standby adventures.
